This Original Postcard is part of a group of recently unearthed original Grande Ballroom material acquired decades ago by a collector intimately connected to the late 1960s Detroit music scene. We now have the pleasure of offering these rare, difficult to find relics to the collecting community in this auction!
Ming the Merciless, the Flash Gordon comic icon, is featured in the Gary Grimshaw designed image exhibited on this popular Grande Ballroom Postcard. 1967 was the first year that the powerhouse group Cream played in the United States. This run of concert performances in Detroit took place just months after the release of their second album, at the famed Grande Ballroom in December of 1967. Cream was by far one of the most dynamic and influential power trios of the era. Having formed in 1966, the band met with critical acclaim. However, after a couple of years of heavy touring, the band was strained by internal conflict between Baker and Bruce. They would close down shop by the end of 1968.
The Grande Ballroom series produced some of the finest imagery from the 1960’s music scene. In many cases promoter Russ Gibb chose to produce postcards, such as this one to promote events. That being the case, Grande cards and card sets have become one of the most highly sought after items by serious collectors. The print runs were low and the artwork was equally compelling with artists like Gary Grimshaw and Carl Lundgren creating visual masterworks on a weekly basis. The material is obscenely difficult to find in undamaged condition, plus the history of the Grande is as interesting as any of the San Francisco dance halls.
