This lot is part of a group of recently unearthed original Grande Ballroom material acquired decades ago by a collector intimately connected to the late 1960s Detroit music scene. We now have the pleasure of offering these rare, difficult to find relics to the collecting community in this auction!
This HIGH GRADE original Grande Ballroom Postcard by master Detroit artist Gary Grimshaw advertises Moby Grape, The MC5 and more performing at the venue in December 1967. Moby Grape were touted to be the hottest SF band of the era until they encountered a series of unfortunate events that led to their eventual downfall. It’s too much to discuss here but check the history books for the whole story.
There is no known poster to exist for this event. The Grande Ballroom series produced some of the finest imagery from the 1960s music scene. In many cases, like this one, promoter Russ Gibb chose to only produce postcards to promote events. That being the case, Grande cards and card sets have become one of the most highly sought after items by serious collectors.
