The concert poster designed for the 1969 Jimi Hendrix Experience tour of Germany is considered by many to be the ultimate find in Rock Poster collecting. Original copies are incredibly difficult to obtain. The poster originally was printed for each of the 9 stops on the ‘69 tour. There are two original formats, a standard-sized edition measuring 25.5 x 33" and a giant subway poster that measures 33 x 46.58". The latter is stunning and must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. The tour also produced a souvenir copy of the poster that was folded into a program and sold at the shows. The poster offered here in this auction is the official US merchandise edition that measures 25.13 x 35.38". This edition produced by Darien House in 1969 was sold at Jimi Hendrix Experience concerts in the United States.
The poster nicknamed Hendrix Medusa, was designed by Gunther Kieser who was the preeminent German concert poster artist of the 1960s, having designed posters for almost every notable band of the era. His Hendrix is considered his masterwork. The image is so popular and has been bootlegged so many times that it’s likely the most pirated rock poster of all time.
The program and the merchandise version were purposely intentionally given a non-existent tour date of January 15th to differentiate the original concert posters from the reprints. Fortunately, for collectors, the bootlegs also use this fictitious date.
The original concert posters are some of the most valuable Hendrix posters of all and this official merchandise poster is a must-have to hold space until (and if) you can find an original. These Darien House printings are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
