This fabulous original handbill is only one of a few of this issue to ever appear in our auction with CGC grading! A couple months before Bill Graham & Chet Helms really got the Fillmore rolling, two other Family Dog affiliates took over concert producing: Danny Rifkin & Rock Scully. The pair used California Hall as their independent base-venue. They only produced 2 concerts before exploring a different side of San Francisco’s fledgling music industry - band management, most notably with the Grateful Dead.
This handbill was designed by George Hunter of the Charlatans in that same RE-CONTEXTUALIZED old-timey vernacular that was pioneered on the Seed poster. It is also noted as a Family Dog production before the Wes Wilson - Chet Helms FD logo became well recognized.
Three years ago, we auctioned another CGC graded example of this handbill for $1,020.00. CGC authentication has brought much needed integrity and stability to the market for Original Handbills like this that are relatively easy to counterfeit. For this reason, demand and interest has exploded for vintage CGC authenticated and graded handbills.
