This is a photo taken by Jim Marshall during the Jimi Hendrix concert at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on June 25th, 1967. This is a notoriously famous photo from his gig in the Panhandle, which took place just a few weeks following his mind blowing performance at Monterey AND in the afternoon just before their last scheduled concert appearance at The Fillmore! This photo was produced sepia toned.
These press printed photos were likely printed shortly after the Hendrix concert in 1967, (circa 1967 / 1968 or possibly 1969) and are extremely rare. This is the first example we've ever had in our auctions!
Hunter S. Thompson from the SF Gate article on the concert in the Panhandle: "During that first weekend of the Summer of Love, Hendrix’s free show in the Panhandle was not only a unique moment in one of the most exciting chapters of his career, but also an event which embodied everything that was organic and wonderful about the Haight Ashbury scene at its peak — “the high water mark,” as Hunter S. Thompson would famously reflect a few years later, just before “the wave finally broke and rolled back.”
Jim Marshall was an American photographer and photojournalist who photographed musicians of the 1960s and 1970s. Earning the trust of his subjects, he had extended access to his subjects both on and off-stage. Marshall was the official photographer for the Beatles' final concert in San Francisco's Candlestick Park, and he was head-photographer at Woodstock. He chronicled the music industry and it’s icons from the 1950s through early 2000s.
