The Mother of Invention's contribution to rock music has been mostly overlooked; however, their impact was far greater than their commercial potential. Discounted by the masses as comedy or experimental tomfoolery, essentially, they were too weird for American consumers.
Regardless, a closer look at the impact of their debut LP, "Freak Out," in June 1966 reveals that the Mothers, led by enigmatic music visionary Frank Zappa, pushed studio recording to a new level. For historical context, the typical albums of the era touted as giant steps forward in rock music production were: The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" in May of 1966, The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's" in March of 1967, and although released in March of '67, The Velvet Underground and Nico, also produced by Tom Wilson, was recorded within a month of "Freak Out."
The Mothers' residency in 1967 at the Café Au Go Go and the Garrick Theater "Upstairs" showcased the band's unique combination of rock, jazz, doo-wop, blues, and avant-garde composition. These Freak shows were attended by New York scenesters of the day, including '60s rock royalty. Hendrix and Clapton both attended and reportedly jumped on stage with the ensemble.
The design for this poster was lifted from the album cover art from the Mothers' second album, "Absolutely Free."
