This original handbill was created for the legendary Velvet Underground's appearance at the Retinal Circus in Vancouver, BC for a run of Halloween shows in 1968. Blacksnake Blues Band and Ectoplasmic Assault performed as supporting acts. The handbill was designed by Frank Lewis.
Verve Records released The Velvet Underground's 2nd LP "White Light/White Heat" on January 30, 1968, which was the band's last studio album with multi-instrumentalist and founding member John Cale.
While this LP did not fare well in the ratings following its original release, ultimately, "White Light/White Heat" had a significant impact on early forms of punk rock and no wave, and eventually appeared on several lists of the greatest albums of all time, including Rolling Stone Magazine eventually rating it at number 272 on it's "500 Greatest Albums of all Time" listing in 2020.
The Velvet Underground began working recording for their 3rd LP immediately following their performances at these Halloween Retinal Circus gigs in the fall of 1968, which their new label, MGM, released in March of 1969.
Condition: corner crease top left.
