Coverage of Marty Balin's passing several years ago spurred worldwide interest in Jefferson Airplane, The Matrix and Balin's role with both. Balin co-founded the Airplane. He got a group of investors together to open the Matrix so San Francisco bands playing psychedelic music would have a dedicated performance space to call their own. Balin gave the investors a 75% interest in the club while keeping a 25% interest for himself in return for managing the club.
This poster is a perfect example of why many believe these posters are severely undervalued. The Matrix is an incredibly important venue as it was San Francisco’s first folk club EVER. The Matrix opened in August 1965 and was a tiny venue holding just over 100 concert-goers. We don’t know for certain how many posters were created for this super early 1966 show, but we can estimate it to be around 250 max. This is a very historical very rare and very collectible specimen!
Condition: Pinholes, restored color added to cover tape pulls.
