Here we are offering a a super scarce "Diggers" Original Handbill promoting Bedrock One. Bedrock One was a "psychedelic community happening" that was presented in San Francisco in 1967 which promised to change the experience of the Dance Hall Rock show. The organizers attempted to create an interactive environment that truly made the attendees part of the event. There are several promotional items that were created for the event but this double sided handbill is perhaps the most desirable of all. It was printed by the Communication Company who were the publishing arm of the Diggers. This is only the second CGC graded example of this cool pre-concert, first printing handbill to appear in one of our auctions!
Appearances at this event included the Steve Miller Blues Band, Dino Valenti, Orkus'tra, S.F. Mime Troupe and The Diggers. The Orkustra was part of the unique Haight History, especially since DAVID LAFLAMME very recently passed on and this was his first Bay Area music group effort, becoming part of the core of the "Electric Chamber Orchestra" avant garde experimental psychedelic rock band, before moving on to an early version of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks and then forming his world renowned group "It's a Beautiful Day" in the summer of 1967.
These days the Diggers are little-known. But in 1966 - 1968, such was the Diggers’ presence and notoriety that seemingly every reporter filing a story on the Haight included the Diggers in their account. "A band of hippie do-gooders", said Time magazine. "A true peace corps", wrote local daily newspaper columnist (and future Rolling Stone editor) Ralph J. Gleason. The Beatles’ press officer Derek Taylor would write, "The Diggers were in my opinion the core of the whole underground counterculture because they were our conscience".
This Ultra Mega Rare double-sided handbill, printed on thick Kraft (brown, butcher paper like) stock, is easily THE scarcest of the various handbills created to promote this hallmark, groundbreaking prelude to the Summer of Love happening event. A fairly large, full color image of the front side of this handbill is featured on page 177 of The Art of Rock, plate #2.154, along with an image of the back side, featuring the concert information, as plate #2.155, also viewable in the included scans for this auction lot. Most of the copies extant, which were printed on the Communication Company's gestetner printing machine, have an ink smudge or two, while copies free of the printing defect are extremely few and very seldom seen!
