Carlos Santana's distinctive guitar style, characterized by his soulful tone and captivating melodic phrasing, had become instantly recognizable by the 1970s. Their self-titled debut album Santana, released in 1969, had already catapulted them to international fame, thanks to hits like "Evil Ways" and "Black Magic Woman." By 1971, Santana had released two more critically acclaimed albums, Abraxas (1970) and Santana III (1971). These albums showcased the band's versatility and ability to seamlessly blend genres, creating a sound that appealed to a diverse audience. This Randy Tuten issue was produced for Santana at the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden in New York City playing for 3 nights in October 1971.
