Here's an EARLY original double-sided program / handbill advertising a historic run of 2 shows by the Grateful Dead in New York during late December 1967. The concerts took place at the Village Theater, later to become the Fillmore East! It's a miracle this original handbill has survived all these years, in any condition!
The reverse of the program states that the Dead would play "in concert rendition of new numbers from records you'll be hearing in 1968" referring to songs appearing on the upcoming "Anthem of the Sun" record. Yet in a strange twist of fate their sets were not recorded. The sets from the other band on the bill Take Five did get recorded. It doesn't appear that the lesser known Take Five ever released a record. The program even offers a coupon: "Good for $1.00 list price of record being cut at this theater by Take Five."
Grateful Dead historian Dennis McNally wrote about the 1967 Village Theater shows: "The building was essentially a wreck and snow actually came through a hole in the roof while they were playing. It was so ungodly cold that the drummers played in gloves and people built a bonfire on the floor in front of the stage". It is unlikely another example of this rare Dead relic will surface again for collectors anytime soon. Do not pass up the chance to own a piece of history!
