While the Grateful Dead continued to push themselves musically during the 1970s, the same cannot be said for the Dead's poster art during the decade. The explosion of creative imagery from the '60s waned as band promotion shifted to more cost-effective methods like FM radio and newspaper advertising. Consequently, well-illustrated posters were rarely created. However, December of 1973 witnessed two exceptional exceptions to this trend, both advertising shows at North Carolina colleges – there is the Charlotte NC poster from 12/10 and the Duke University poster from 12/8 listed here.
The original Duke University Dead poster seldom comes up for sale. There was a reprint published by ARTROCK in the ’90s, that comes up for auction from time to time. But the first copies are hen's teeth. We sold one first printing, over 3 years ago, and it hammered for $11,400.00.
