An ultra-scarce first printing poster from a run of very early and special shows the Grateful Dead played at the legendary Matrix in late 1966! The bizarre drawings were originally designed by Heinrich Kley, a late 19th Century German editorial illustrator and painter.
Artist Richard A. Lyon created the lettering and overall design of the poster while incorporating the Kley drawings into the work. Lyon also produced a Moby Grape poster for The Matrix the same year, as well as a Big Brother one, both with similar lettering and a different set of drawings he utilized by Heinrich Kley into the compositions.
Early Grateful Dead posters are long lost treasures and their shows at the Matrix were special. The soundboard recording circulates from the final night of the run and is a classic among collectors as an early Dead favorite. There is a wonderful expanded 15-minute version of Viola Lee Blues from the 12/1 show along with Jerry's historical statement in-between songs: "This is the last set of our last appearance on a Thursday at the Matrix" giving the hint that the venue was closing soon.
We at PAE have rarely seen this original first-printing poster come through our doors. Issues from the Matrix were printed in extremely low quantities. Always in top demand in ANY condition, this poster represents a special opportunity for the historic Dead material collector. The Matrix was a tiny club that held just 150. How many original first printing posters could they have possibly produced? An amazing collectible!
