This lot offers what is considered by many collectors to be the most famous concert poster from the 1960’s -- Rick Griffin’s masterpiece the Jimi Hendrix Flying Eyeball BG-105. This famous poster represents what is arguably the best artwork ever rendered for a rock concert poster.
This poster works on every level. It was created by the most inventive artist of the genre promoting the most striking musician of the era at the most famous venue of all!
The story behind the poster is that promoter Bill Graham dropped the ball the first time Hendrix played the Fillmore by placing the groundbreaking guitarist THIRD on the bill (BG-69). The next time Hendrix came around it was made clear to Graham by Hendrix management that he needed to make up for his previous lack of judgment. Of course Graham went straight to Rick Griffin to create the best possible work of art. The rest is history.
The specimen offered here is a huge and beautiful Limited Edition Serigraph that was signed by Rick Griffin and published by Art Rock. The edition was supposed to be 500 pieces however Griffin never signed all of the prints. This is an ARTIST'S PROOF #16 of which a small number were made.
This is a true piece of Fine Art that was produced on ultra high quality hand laid paper. There is a piece of framer’s tape on the top back edge.Written on the tape it is noted in pencil “H20 soluble.” There is a tiny nick in the top right edge 3/16 “ inch below the top right corner. There is a ¼” tear on the bottom edge 3 ¼ inches to the right of the bottom left corner. There are also 4 small light dents in the surface of the print.
The value of these beautiful Serigraphs have remained remarkably consistent at auction. We have recorded recent auction sales of $3960 on 9/5/13 $3277 on 10/5/14 and $3291 on 5/12/16. NONE OF THESE PREVIOUSE SALES WERE ARTIST’S PROOFS. THE SPECIMEN OFFERED HERE IS SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY RICK GRIFFIN “AP16.”
