Original copies of Rick Griffin's Hawaiian Aoxomoxoa are hard to come by. Deeply Influenced by California Culture, it encapsulates the essential psychedelic surfer vibe. To many collectors, it's Rick Griffin's finest Grateful Dead Art.
Griffin's signature typeset is what makes this poster so special. That lettering was made famous after appearing on the Grateful Dead's 3rd Album, "Aoxomoxoa'". It is, however, understood that the Hawaiian Aoxomoxoa rendering pre-dates the Album art.
The story behind the "Hawaiian Aoxomoxoa" poster is of folklore-type proportions among collectors. There are several recollections of the posters' plight from the printer's shop to the small sample of surviving copies that exist today. The one thing that is verified is that the concert was canceled.
This poster was conservatively graded 3.0 by CGC. Admittedly, the poster has its share of battle scars, however, it is intact. There is paper and ink loss but not much critical material is missing. It's a respectable copy to display. The certification was deemed essential for this poster, as there is a known pirate printing. Additionally, many surviving copies are restored. This poster is a candidate for those who take that path with their posters.
This poster at one time held a record high for psychedelic concert posters. Since the introduction of 3rd party certification, the leader is the FD-26 mostly because there are enough copies to make a strong illustration of value/condition. With posters like the Hawaii Aoxomoxoa where so few exist, just landing one is a major victory. Here is the chance.
