2019 Stanley Mouse FD-26 Grateful Dead Avalon Mouse Hand Colored Signed Mouse Print Mint 91

We are pleased to offer for auction an original one of a kind hand painted edition of Mouse & Kelley’s famed FD-26 Skull and Roses poster. This offering is from an open edition that the artist has painted periodically for the past 5 years. Like a grateful dead concert, no two are alike. The various color combinations create an exciting new look for each painting.

The FD-26 requires little explanation to our audience. The poster has been discussed thoroughly and will continue to be the torch bearer in the graded poster market . Needless to say, the 1966 Avalon poster has survived the test of time and is a key item for collectors. With strong copies selling at six figure levels, this artist edition is a potential steal for our buyers.

PAE first encountered the Mouse hand painted editions at the TRPS show in San Francisco in 2019. Stanley showed up with several of these paintings and it was clear to us at the time that these were something special. On the surface they appeared like a mouse coloring book... black white lines that were loosely colored in by mouse. However a closer look revealed the intricacy and detail that was given to these artworks. The first run of these painting included several other Mouse/Kelley creations, the FD-29 and the Edwardian Ball were used as models for the experiment, but it was clear that the FD-26 was the prize. At the time the concept was just starting to take shape as Mouse began to experiment with coloring a handful of black and white giclee prints of famous posters. The first several that were done were airbrushed and then light handwork was added with colored pencil and acrylic paint.

These paintings have evolved significantly over time and are now beyond stunning. Mouse showed up to the 2022 TRPS show with a handful of the fully painted editions in a variety of color combinations. They sold out quickly at $2000 a painting. The copy in this auction was acquired at this event and we think its one of the finest we've encountered.
