Four (4) of these seven (7) large bus panels are signed by the artist Victor Moscoso!

The visionary illustrators of the San Francisco psychedelic scene in the '60s created groundbreaking work in two primary genres: concert posters, and comics.

The Fillmore and the Avalon poster series relied heavily on the work of Wes Wilson, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin, Lee Conklin, and Bonnie Maclean. Alternately, the stable of artists that published  Zap Comix (the standard bearer of the underground comix movement) included R. Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Robert Williams, Spain, and Gilbert Shelton, along with Griffin and Moscoso. These pioneers collectively challenged traditional conventions in both mediums. Victor Moscoso was one of the major artists that was most successful in crossing over between these two camps. His signature typeface and use of vibrating colors defined his poster style. His comic artwork is equally powerful, transporting the viewer through surreal alternate universes.

One of the early free-form FM Rock radio stations, KSAN, utilized Moscoso’s comic art to create a series of advertising panels that were displayed in San Francisco’s municipal buses in 1971. There were originally 15 different panels that were sequentially displayed in buses for commuters to read as a quasi-comic strip. The promotion was displayed on 100 buses for one month. Much like posters, promotional cards like these seldom survive their original use as they were considered disposable advertising. When the new ones went up the old ones were trashed. Needless to say, very few have survived the years.

We are excited to offer this collection of 7 KSAN Moscoso bus signs, which seldom appear for public sale. In 2016 a complete set sold for $6500 in Heritage auctions signature comic art sale. Other than that, a few single panels are all that have surfaced. The signs have been held in a private collection for decades.
