Peter Max was one of the most successful commercial artists of the era and popularized the imagery and color schemes that were created by the San Francisco poster artists. This poster was created for a 1967 event titled "Penney's Rainbow Lane". Max developed a signature style of colorful, cosmic themes and images in all of his poster designs. They often included nature, figures, astronomy, and color relationships all within bright studies in bold composition.

In the 2013 hardcover book The Universe of Peter Max, the artist describes many of the subjects and themes of his artwork. "My cosmic art subjects were always euphoric. Himalayan sages levitating under a shower of flowers beside snow capped mountain peaks. Faces and flowers exploding into a symmetrical cosmic butterfly. Mirrored lakes and mountains with a cascade of stars and planets. Flowers in perpetual states of organic growth, blossoms begetting blossoms. My inspiration came from the new youth movement in America, and in return, spoke to it."
