We have only auctioned another example of this original first printing poster once before, which speaks for its scarcity. The dimensions of this example here differ slightly in height than the one we have previously auctioned, however we do not have enough information to determine if this example was printed on different sized paper stock than others.
This scarce original screenprint poster was created for a Midwest performance by the Grateful Dead on their Winter 1973 tour. The show took place at the University of Iowa Fieldhouse on February 24th. We are extremely pleased to be able to feature this beautiful specimen to the collecting community in this auction!
One of just a handful known of this original full color pre-concert first printings and this is just the second example of this relic we have EVER handled. Black & white version printings of this issue have surfaced for collectors over the years here and there - however the color poster like this one here is almost impossible to locate and stands in a league of its own!
The fieldhouse was packed to the gills. The venue's max capacity was 10,000 and with over 8,000 tickets sold in advance the remaining were sold that afternoon at the box office & sold out very quickly. The show was a memorable early 1973 Dead concert featuring a stellar early performance of Eyes of the World, which made its premiere just a week earlier.
It is not an understatement to say that there are many highly sophisticated collectors with deep pockets that have been unsuccessfully chasing this elusive Grateful Dead masterpiece for literally decades. We count ourselves in this group! Because the MANY have been chasing the FEW KNOWN to exist demand is high.
