Among the first 30 of the Bill Graham series there are those issues that are “sleepers” and are under appreciated and then there are those issues that are already recognized as highly desirable rarities. This piece is the latter! This is also the finest quality UNRESTORED example to appear at auction in the past year!
The influence of the Texas Psychedelic Band 13th Floor Elevators on the San Francisco sound is well documented in the history books. The captivating Herb Greene photo of a doe –eyed Grace Slick (then a member of Great Society) is the centerpiece of this poster additionally she is surrounded by the fabulous lettering of artist Wes Wilson. A classic poster in all regards.
100% Original with no restoration of any kind. There are tack holes in each corner light creases on the bottom left and handling on the top edge and minor ink loss on the top edge. There is also a tiny area where the paper is lifting on the left edge. But the colors are full and bright and this example is still better than most we come across.
Proof of this fact is the recent auction appearances for this issue which have been especially sparce and uninspired. Three different RESTORED copies were auctioned in 2016 for $1443 $1678 and $2070. We sold a beat up copy on 6/2/16 that we graded PAE 69 for $1150. It will be interesting to see what this classic piece brings now as the market demand must be pent up for 100% Original examples with no restoration at this time.
