This double sided promotional handbill from Elektra Records was created for David Peel and Lower East Side's 1970 studio album, The American Revolution. This is the FIRST time it is appearing in our auction! 100% original with no restoration.

DAVID PEEL, was an agitprop / subversive "Hemp Hero" & extremely early punk-New York street musician, folk singer, counterculture icon, as well as a one-time JOHN LENNON crony, died on April 7th, 2017 at the age of 73.

Peel's actual name was "David Rosario", and first came to notoriety in the late Sixties when he and his band, "The Lower East Side" (named after the NYC region where the group routinely performed on the streets, produced a popular outsider hit with "I LIKE MARIJUANA", from the bands' 1968 debut "HAVE A MARIJUANA", which was recorded live on NYC streets, also contained anthems like "UP AGAINST THE WALL", dedicated to the anarchist group, along with "SHOW ME THE WAY TO GET STONED."

Much later, JOHN LENNON & YOKO ONO walked around Union Square Park and eventually witnessed one of Peel's street performances, sparking a fascination by Peel, remarking "He can’t sing, or he can’t really play. Picasso spent 40 years trying to get as simple as that.”

Lennon soon signed Peel to APPLE RECORDS, and along with Yoko, produced Peel and the lower East Side's 1972 LP "THE POPE SMOKES DOPE", as well as Lennon later collaborating with Peel's street performances along with much higher-profile gigs, including appearing in a pair of performances on THE DAVID FROST SHOW, which featured Lennon playing on a tea-chest bass, as well as gigging at 1971's JOHN SINCLAIR FREEDOM RALLY.
