1980 R.E.M. The 40 Watt Club Athens Flyer

This original, home-made-looking 1980 piece was produced to promote a series of shows at the legendary 40 Watt Club in Athens Georgia. One gig advertised R.E.M. performing during the FIRST YEAR of the band's existence and a whole year before they even released their very first single!


Much like CBGB's and the Whisky a Go-Go The 40 Watt Club was instrumental in launching new & young punk rock new wave and progressive music. The venue was also the primary performance space for numerous up-and-coming "Athens bands" including R.E.M. Pylon Love Tractor The Primates and Modern Skirts. The DIY ethos and informality of the club were similar to the Carousel Ballroom decades prior on the west coast and very instrumental in creating a true punk rock scene in Athens. In more recent years the club was the launching platform for the nationally renowned Drive-By Truckers.
