We are pleased to offer this Original Poster from a very noteworthy and legendary Hendrix event! Difficult to find in ANY condition, this LARGE poster is a beauty to behold. Stories about the Newport 1969 festival at Devonshire Downs have been told and passed down for generations. Its popularity in folklore naturally revolves mostly around the legendary Jimi Hendrix.
For starters, it was attended by an estimated 200,000 fans, which was not only the largest festival at that time (only to be topped by Woodstock a couple months later), but it was certainly the largest audience Jimi had performed to up until that point. Then things got weird. The Jimi Hendrix Experience headlined Friday (the first night) and their set was sub-par and confusing. Apparently it seemed Jimi may have gotten dosed prior to stepping on the stage to play. To make matters worse, the festival was policed by the Hells Angels, whom were not known as being friendly when it came to organized chaos. There were several hundred people injured from riots that apparently broke out near the entrance gates.
The three day festival was also stocked with inadequate food, drink and restroom facilities, as well as poor stage sound during several performances. The good news? Jimi Hendrix prevailed by returning on Sunday for a second set! The Sunday set was an expansive improvisational jam with Eric Burdon, Buddy Miles, Tracy Nelson, and Mother Earth. Jimi's enthusiastic participation won over the crowd and it proved to be THE highlight of the entire weekend!
