In 1976 Robert Alcock and Dick Pope two art collectors/dealers doing business as Alcock and Dick’s Trading Company presented an exhibition of the art of Rick Griffin. The exhibit was held at The Roundhouse in London an old railroad house turned arts venue which hosted many great artists from 1966 to the present day. The Roundhouse showcased much of Griffin’s original art posters and comic art. Alcock and Dick’s had reprinted some of Griffin’s famous posters for sale at the show. Some time after the show Alcock and Pope split up the collection and went their separate ways. The consigner of these pieces bought them directly from Robert Alcock at some point after the show.
In 1975 Rolling Stone Magazine commissioned Rick Griffin on a series of 4 illustrations to be paired up with an article about Timothy Leary’s 1970 escape from prison. Unfortunately Playboy published the article and the work was never used. This series was reprinted and for sale at the Roundhouse exhibition.
