The War Is Over peace campaign was conceived by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1969. The couple began the campaign on December 15th, distributing posters and flyers as well as creating radio and newspaper announcements and utilizing billboards to spread the message. The campaign was executed in 12 cities around the world, and the message was simple: “War is over, if you want it”. The design they chose for these posters was reminiscent of army recruitment posters from World War I. Two years later, Lennon released the now-classic Christmas song, “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” which used the message from the campaign as its chorus.

The campaign continued for years after, and Yoko continues to create and distribute posters and ads with the same message to this day. The greeting from John and Yoko at the bottom of the poster changed based on the time of year in which that particular poster was distributed. The first round of posters read “Happy Christmas from John & Yoko” while others read “Happy New Year from John & Yoko”. The one we are offering here is from 1972 and simply reads “ Love and Peace from John & Yoko”. However, the original message has always stayed the same. Thin porous paper. Light toning around the edge, few tiny creases, tiny stain near the bottom edge, handling.
