We are excited to offer this extremely scarce Grateful Dead Original Poster in our auction with CGC authentication for the FIRST time! The New Riders of the Purple Sage opened the show at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento on December 22nd 1970. The Dead followed with two sets of music.

This beautiful colorful artwork by Roger Shepherd is proudly displayed in Paul Grushkin's Art of Rock book as plate AOR #4.101. Our records have only tracked a small handful of these posters surfacing for collectors at other public auctions over the years. This is the first example we have ever handled in over 13 years of auctioning posters. Be sure to check out the TICKET for this concert also in this auction right now!

If you love the music of the Grateful Dead as much as we do it is important to note that the shows the Dead shared with the New Riders during this era were special. Jerry Garcia was fascinated with the pedal-steel guitar which he had just begun to toy with the year prior. Phil Lesh recalled: "Just as with any other instrument he picked up he made it sing". Garcia played pedal-steel on several songs on the Workingman's Dead & American Beauty 1970 albums. During many concerts that year with the New Riders Jerry would join the band on stage and play pedal-steel. Dead archivist Chris Koeber who attended this show in Sacramento has commented on Garcia's dazzling pedal-steel contribution during their song "Last Lonely Eagle" that night.

Music-Lover Note: To hear more beautiful pedal-steel work by Jerry Garcia from that era be sure to check out his country licks on "Teach Your Children" from the classic CSNY 1970 album "Déjà vu" and the absolutely lovely ballad "I Used to Be a King" from Graham Nash's first solo album "Songs for Beginners".
