PAE is pleased to present the collecting community with the very FIRST specimen of this poster to EVER appear in our auction.

Advanced collectors are well aware that the few existing concert posters that have survived the past 50+ years from the Santa Venetia Armory are amongst the most coveted issues ever produced.

The news of last month’s landmark auctioning of the Grateful Dead Santa Venetia Concert Poster for $16 200 (click here to see) resulted in the surfacing of this MUSEUM QUALITY RARITY offered now.

This poster is a spectacular piece of 1960’s San Francisco Sound history. It features a wonderful photo of the band by legendary photographer Herb Greene and was created for a concert that took place just 12 days after the band’s historic performance at The Human Be-In and just a few weeks before the band’s breakthrough album release Surrealistic Pillow that would quickly catapult The Airplane managed by Bill Graham into international stars.

Surrealistic Pillow was titled by Jerry Garcia who was a “shadow producer” of the album and credited in the liner notes as “Spiritual Advisor”. The album contained the band’s biggest hits “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love” which would become the official anthem of 1967’s Summer of Love.

The most minimal research on the internet will reveal that just a small handful of these posters are known to exist in ANY condition and many knowledgeable collectors consider this to be amongst the most desirable Jefferson Airplane concert posters ever produced.

The extreme rarity of this poster is further reinforced by the fact that this is the very FIRST specimen to EVER appear in our auction and the FIRST to appear in any public auction in at least a decade or more. In fact this issue is so elusive that a photograph was unable to be secured for publication in The Art of Rock!

In addition to tremendous rarity and historical importance of this poster what immediately stands out is this specimen’s Museum Quality state of preservation. This poster is free of any tears or pinholes and features fresh bold colors. Miraculously this large cardboard poster appears in practically the very same condition as it was created by the legendary Tilghman Press 54 years ago!

One of the things that makes this hobby so interesting and our auctions so fascinating is that it is all but impossible to ascertain a value for a collectible that we have never offered before and which NOBODY can predict when … if ever… will become available again. (It is worth noting for comparison purposes that the Grateful Dead Santa Venetia concert poster that we auctioned for $16 200 last month exhibited considerable flaws and was graded 5.5 a different quality altogether from the specimen offered here)

Regardless of where the hammer falls the collector that emerges victorious on this lot will be adding a World Class Rarity that is sure to become a highlight in whichever collection it resides.
