This original first printing handbill was produced to promote Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention at the Rock-Pile in Toronto on February 23rd 1969. Beautiful design and artwork!
By this time in early ’69 Frank Zappa was moving the band away from the more lyrically oriented material that appeared on their first handful of records. The recently released “No Commercial Potential” musical project records like Cruising With Ruben & The Jets - which was just 2 months old at this Toronto concert - was not the direction Zappa was now going with his live performances.
As a result the band was having some difficulty and Frank himself was feeling financial pressure. Zappa was lucky enough to sign with Reprise create the Bizarre label and release the double album “Uncle Meat” a couple months later which helped some of the financial strain of paying the band members. However his vast imagination & musical directions continued to expand rapidly. He recorded his solo album "Hot Rats" during the summer and by the end of the year this incarnation of the Mothers would disband.
