Here for the first time in our auction we have a CGC Graded example of this great looking Museum Quality Condition Handbill! This original first printing piece advertises shows at the historic Matrix venue during October 1968 (The Art of Rock Book incorrectly lists this event as 1969). The artwork was created by Seattle's George Chacona along with Marty Rice.
Included in the month's itinerary were Steve Miller Elvin Bishop Allmen Joy and most notably Jerry Garcia & Friends on October 8th - 10th. These shows were officially billed as "Jerry Garrceeah and His Friends" on the handbill however the "On The Town" column in the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper by Ralph J. Gleason billed this show as "The Grateful Dead and Elvin Bishop". Technically it was not the Grateful Dead. Only Garcia Hart Lesh and Kreutzmann of the band performed.
In October 1968 Bob Weir and Pigpen were kicked out of the Grateful Dead for their lack of commitment to the project and the practice sessions. The remaining members of the Dead played a few shows at the Matrix billed as "Mickey And The Hartbeats". Various friends would sit in on these shows. The Matrix was a tiny club in San Francisco that held just 150 people. How many handbills could they have possibly produced for this event? Museum Quality Condition with no visible flaws of any kind!
