The Closing of Winterland was a pivotal mark in the history of the San Francisco music scene. The old Ice Rink/ entertainment venue had been used by Bill Graham since 1966 for larger audiences. The 5400 Seat arena had been the home of many historic music performances including The Bands “Last Waltz”  on Thanksgiving 1976. It was fitting for the last show at Winterland to be staged by the Grateful dead as they had performed there more times than any other band. The Dead honored the occasion with one of their finest all time performances. In support were The New Riders and The Blues Brothers.

New Years was always one of Graham’s favorite events. He would ring in the New Year costumed as father time and a sea of balloons would fall onto the crowd at midnight. For this one Ken Kesey delivered the countdown to the New Year as Graham flew across the arena on an enormous flaming ember of marijuana!

The poster that was created for the show is equally memorable. Mouse and Kelley pulled out all the stops to create this legendary poster. Known to collectors as “The Blue Rose” this timeless collaboration between the two artists is a must have item. The value of this poster has skyrocketed over that past decade. Now is the time to get your copy while they are still a relative bargain.
