Here we have an original cardboard concert poster produced for Canned Heat John Lee Hooker and Southwind appearing at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in August 1971. This is the FIRST EXAMPLE of this rare issue we have ever auctioned!
Canned Heat appeared at most of the major musical events at the end of the 1960s including Monterey and Woodstock. They continued to tour through the early seventies and always had stellar supporting acts along for the ride. The California based rockabilly & country influenced Southwind were in the final phase of their existence disbanding shortly after this 1971 tour. Although they were short-lived Southwind was one of the best unknown bands of this era.
This 100% Original poster from Santa Monica was produced by Colby Printing Co before the concert. The historic Colby Poster Printing Company produced promotional material between 1948 and 2012 and they became legendary for their signature fluorescent inks and bold all-caps typography although none of the original staff had any formal design training. They were members of the letterpress union the screen printers union and the typesetters union.
