A true period piece and snapshot of history. This original promotional poster features the Michigan band MC5 and was produced / printed by the White Panther Party in 1969. The White Panthers were a far-left anti-racist white political group founded in 1968 by John Sinclair Leni Sinclair and Pun Plamondon. John Sinclair made every effort to ensure that the White Panthers were not mistaken for a white supremacist group responding to such claims with "Quite The Contrary."
Sinclair also founded the Ann Arbor Sun a local newspaper in Michigan which changed to the Trans-Love Energies Organization operated by his wife Leni and artist Gary Grimshaw. They set up shop 1510 Hill St where the Ann Arbor Sun was located. The newspaper published the White Panthers ten-point program statement in 1968 and a revised listing in 1969. The statement requested complete freedom and equality for all. This original poster is a direct link to the historically important civil rights movement.
The great MC5 started their music career in Michigan and developed a reputation for energetic and polemical live performances. They were a mainstay at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. Their 1969 debut album “Kick Out the Jams” landed them into the history books. Their lifespan was unfortunately short-lived and in 1972 the band came to an end - just three years after their debut record. THIS PROMOTIONAL POSTER IS EXTREMELY SCARCE!
