1980-R.E.M. The 40 Watt Club in Athens Concert Flier-SUPER EARLY R.E.M. RELIC! FIRST PAE APPEARANCE! PAE Near Mint '83'

Here we have a SUPER EARLY R.E.M. original flier appearing in our auction for the very first time! This home-made-looking 1980 piece was produced to promote a concert they performed at the legendary 40 Watt Club in Athens Georgia - in the group's hometown! The show took place during the FIRST YEAR of the band's existence and a whole year before they even released their very first single!

Much like CBGB's and the Whisky a Go Go The 40 Watt Club was instrumental in launching new & young punk rock new wave and progressive music. The venue was also the primary performance space for numerous up and coming "Athens bands" including R.E.M. Pylon Love Tractor The Primates and Modern Skirts. The DIY ethos and informality of the club were similar to the Carousel Ballroom decades prior on the west coast and very instrumental in creating a true punk rock scene in Athens. In more recent years the club was the launching platform for the nationally renowned Drive-By Truckers.

This R.E.M. show took place a whole three years before the band released their debut full-length album “Murmur” on the I.R.S. Record label. The album was critically acclaimed and through the support of college radio the band’s career was launched and continued to grow through the 80’s. Much of their SUPER EARLY promotional material like this piece is highly sought after by fans and collectors. This flier is in stunning condition - with only top corner tape pulls on the reverse and light toning on the edges holding it back from a perfect grade!
