This is an original 1950 handbill from the legendary Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh! Top jazz icon King of the alto sax - the one and only Charlie Parker appeared at this concert held on May 3rd. Material featuring the great Charlie Parker from this early era in history seldom surfaces for collectors! The event was presented by the Guardsmen of Pittsburgh and also featured the George Shearing Quintet and Slam Stewart.
Another important aspect in this piece is the concert took place just a handful of years before Charlie Parker’s untimely passing. Although he performed many brilliant concerts and studio recordings during his later years Parker was riddled with mental health problems and heroin addiction. Nevertheless his impact on modern music was clearly undeniable. Miles Davis once said "You can tell the history of jazz in four words: Louis Armstrong Charlie Parker".
