MINBLOWING RARITY AND DESIRABILITY! - Never before appearing in any public auction until right NOW! It's no secret that Frank Zappa enjoys a collector cult following. Couple that with the fact that original GLOBE cardboard posters are amongst the most cherished and VALUABLE concert posters ever produced and you’ve got a grand recipe for a special opportunity. This piece was acquired from the consignor directly from someone who attended this show! When a Globe poster of this high caliber surfaces for collectors a major event has just unfolded before your very eyes!
This cardboard poster was produced for Frank Zappa’s appearance at the Park Center Arena in Charlotte North Carolina on November 4th 1972. Tim Buckley supported. This era has HISTORIC importance as it celebrates a come-back of sorts for Zappa. When he was performing at the Rainbow Theatre a year prior a member of the audience pushed him off the stage and into the concrete-floored orchestra pit. Due to his injuries Zappa suffered an extended period of wheelchair confinement making touring impossible for over half a year.
He returned to the stage in late September 1972 with a 20-piece big band referred to as the “Grand Wazoo”. This was followed by a scaled-down version called the “Petit Wazoo” that toured the US from October to December 1972 including this North Carolina show. The Park Center Arena cardboard poster exhibited here was produced by the legendary Globe Poster Company to advertise this historic appearance.
From its opening in 1929 until its closure in 2010 Globe Poster Company in Baltimore was the go-to place for musicians circuses drag races and concert producers for bold eye-catching letterpress advertising. It's a well known fact that Globe cardboard concert posters are the gold standard among advanced collectors. They rarely show up at public auction and when they do they are always met with enthusiastic bidding!
The desirability of this 100% original poster cannot be overstated. Pirate printings of Globe issues have surfaced in public auctions over the years but this ORIGINAL Cardboard pre-concert first printing Globe specimen is ULTRA RARE and ULTRA COOL -- and it’s the FIRST example to ever appear at public auction!
Estimate - As the FIRST and given it's desirability the degree of difficulty in appraising is too hard. What we can say with 100% certainty is that whoever prevails victorious for this poster will be in the driver's seat and can attach whatever the price he/she/they desires when the times comes to sell.
