Artist Don Van Vliet AKA Captain Beefheart brought his avant garde brand of rock music to the Avalon just a few months after the Avalon Ballroom opened in 1966. This handbill for that event utilizes an illustration from late 19th century German cartoonist Heinrich Kley and is truly striking.
