This poster includes a BONUS: The October 1976 issue of the Yipster Times Newspaper which went to press a month after this concert and contains a photo-spread reviewing this event! (See photo) The front page of the newspaper also reads "At Sea with Jerry Garcia and the Hells Angels".

Seldom surfacing for collectors this lot represents the FIRST appearance of this original poster to ever be featured in our auction! It was produced for a Hells Angels party on board the S.S. Dutchess featuring the Jerry Garcia Band on September 15th 1976. The longtime association between the Hell’s Angels and Garcia goes back to the Grateful Dead's earliest days. The well-known Motorcycle club staged several events over the years that featured the Dead.

This fall 1976 concert was during a special era for Garcia - on the heels of his solo "Reflections" release in the spring and the Dead were rejuvenated earlier that summer after a hiatus from touring. Jerry loved all the opportunities in-between tours and studio projects to jump on stage with his old pal John Kahn and the rest of the crew as often as possible. The bottom line is: The JGB sounded fantastic in 1976!

The S.S. Dutchess set sail from Battery Park up to the George Washington Bridge and back several times and the memorable concert also included the legendary Bo Diddley as well as other opening bands. This was the second time Garcia and the Hells Angels set sail in New York (The first was the 1973 Hells Angels Party event which took place on the SS Bay Belle).

Over the years several people who attended this outrageous event have reminisced about the wild occurrences surrounding this show. Apparently there were free nitrous oxide tanks on all four decks provided by High Times Magazine. Tensions were high with over 200 Hells Angels in attendance however the event was also open to the general public for a $15 fee so there were over 2 000 people partying on the boat by the time it set sail. A wild ride indeed! Regardless the music played that night was wonderful and we strongly urge you to check out a great video of the Garcia Band show here.

Hells Angels material is always amongst the most desirable counter-culture material. When you combine that with a legendary Garcia concert and a difficult to find original poster you have a super interesting and often requested piece of counter-culture history!
