David Nelson of the New Riders once spoke about how the artist of this design Rick Shubb was the person who procured Jerry Garcia's first hit of Acid. David's recollection: "Rick Shubb from Berkeley a Sandy Rothman friend and a bluegrass guy who now makes those Shubb capos had found a place in Palo Alto where we could share the rent. I believe it was probably in the spring of 1965. On the first day we were moving into Gilman Street he said 'I can get LSD.' We went 'Okay' and everybody coughed up their money. It was twelve dollars or something that he had to have from each guy. It was Jerry and Sara me and eight or nine others. We all dropped acid at the same time for the first time. It was everybody’s first time."

The Carousel Ballroom was a short-lived venture by several of the San Francisco bands in managing their own music venue. The experiment which only spanned a few months in 1968 failed due to the bands obvious lack of business prowess. That paired with the questionable ethics of one time Dead manager Ron Rakow led to the Ballrooms demise. Additionally Bill Graham did not take well to the competition and did everything he could to make sure that the venture failed. The fate of the Carousel was that Bill Graham bought the floundering concert hall and renamed it the Fillmore West. Although the Carousel was short lived it inspired a series of posters and handbills that are amongst the best of the entire genre of 1960's psychedelic concert images.
