This original first printing handbill is one of the most sought after desirable and valuable of all Grateful Dead issues and we are pleased to offer the FIRST CGC Graded specimen to appear in any public auction! This beautifully weird artwork from the hand of legendary artist Lee Conklin must be seen in person to be truly appreciated. Lettering and imagery that just intensely screams psychedelia to any and all who dare to view it. There is a reason that "The Art of Rock" devotes almost an entire page to this by itself!
Nicknamed by collectors as the “Ear Head” this handbill advertises shows by the Grateful Dead and Hot Tuna that were held at the Veterans Auditorium in Santa Rosa and one at The Barn Rio Nido California in 1969. Hot Tuna features Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane and they still perform majestic sets of music even to this day! The Dead set from June 27th contained a beautiful 25 minute “Dark Star” and has been a celebrated audio recording by fans for decades.
Of all the designs Lee Conklin produced for The Barn venue in 1969 this Grateful Dead image is by far the most popular. This handbill is hunted extensively by collectors and VERY SELDOM surfaces in public auctions in ANY condition! This example here being the first CGC certified and authenticated example to ever be offered to the collecting community is sure to stir bidding from those waiting patiently for one to finally be available. Last year a CGC graded 5.5 example of the poster reached $3300 in our auction. This handbill is in Museum Quality Condition with no visible flaws of any kind. No nicks cuts tears or pinholes!
